Abstract
Background:Veryfewstudieshaveevaluatedtheassociationbetweenachild’slifestylefactorsandtheirparent’s
abilitytorecognisetheoverweightstatusoftheiroffspring.Theaimofthisstudywastoanalyzethefactors
associatedwithaparent’sabilitytorecognisetheirownoffspring’soverweightstatus.
Methods:125overweightchildrenoutofall1,278schoolbeginnersinNorthernFinlandwereenrolled.
Weightandheightweremeasuredinhealthcareclinics.OverweightstatuswasdefinedbyBMIaccordingto
internationallyacceptedcriteria.Aquestionnairetobefilledinbyparentswasdeliveredbytheschoolnurses.The
parentswereaskedtoevaluatetheiroffspring’sweightstatus.Thechild’seatinghabitsandphysicalactivity
patternswerealsoenquiredabout.Factorgroupsoffoodandphysicalactivityhabitswereformedbyfactor
analysis.Binarylogisticregressionwasperformedusingallvariablesassociatedwithrecognitionofoverweight
statusinunivariateanalyses.Thesignificantriskfactorsinthefinalmodelarereportedusingoddsratios(ORs)and
their95%confidenceintervals(CIs).
Results:Fifty-sevenpercent(69/120)oftheparentsoftheoverweightchildrenconsideredtheirchildasnormal
weight.Child’sBMIwaspositivelyassociatedwithparentalrecognitionofoverweight(OR3.59,CI1.8to7.0).
Overweightboyswerelesslikelytoberecognisedthanoverweightgirls(OR0.14,CI0.033to0.58).Child’ shealthy
diet(OR0.22,CI0.091to0.54)andhighphysicalactivity(OR0.29,CI0.11to0.79)wereinverselyrelatedtoparental
recognitionofoverweightstatus.
Conclusions:Child’shealthyeatinghabitsandphysicalactivityareinverselyrelatedtoparentalrecognitionoftheir
offspring’soverweight.Theseshouldbetakenintoaccountwhenplanningpreventionandtreatmentstrategiesfor
childhoodobesity.
