Chronichypertensionmaymanifestinitiallyaspersistenthypertensionattheendofthepuerperium.Theobjective wastodeterminetheincidenceandmaternalbiochemical,hematologicalandsocio-demographicriskfactorsfor persistenthypertensioninpatientswithpre-eclampsia/eclampsia. Methods:ThiswasaprospectivecohortstudyconductedfromNovember2008toMay2009atMulagohospital laborwardandpostnatalclinic.Participantswere200womenmanagedforpre-eclampsia/eclampsiaandfollowed uptotheendofthepuerperium.Datawascollectedthroughusingpre-codedinterviewer-administered questionnaires,checkingmedicalrecordsandlaboratoryinvestigations.STATA(release9)softwarewasusedfor dataanalysis.Atbivariateanalysis,therelativeriskofpersistenthypertensionwasestimatedatthe95%confidence level.Usingmultivariatelogisticregressionanalysis,factorsthatwereindependentlyassociatedwithpersistent hypertensionwereevaluated. Results:Fiftyfour(27.7%)outofthetotal195womenhadpersistenthypertensionafterpuerperium.Serum creatinineandtheageofthepatientweretheonlyfactorsassociatedwithpersistenceofhypertensionafter puerperium. Conclusion:Nearlyeveryoneinfourmotherswithpre-eclampsia/eclampsiaareatriskofpersistenthypertension afterthepuerperium.Serumcreatinine,serumuricacidandparticipants’ageweretheonlyfactorsindependently associatedwithpersistenceofhypertensionafterthepuerperium.
