Abstract: The study of alternative mating strategies and tactics is an active area of research in evolutionary biology. Ho -
ever, inconsistent terminology and itsm isapplication have inhibited the development of ne theories attempting to explain re-
productive behavioral variations ithin sexes. This revie clarifies conceptualdifferences bet een reproductive strategies and
mating tactics. M ore specifically, e revie and contrastmodels/theories that explainmaintenance of alternative reproduc-
tive strategies andmating tactics, overvie their diversity among vertebrates and invertebrates, and discuss evolutionary and
physiologicalmechanism s underlying thisdiversity. W e concluded by providing future research directions that ill be mi por-
tant in synthesizing our understanding of alternativemating strategies and tactics.
