Simon was born in a smalltown in Southern Italy in 1879 and sailed from Naples to America as a young teenager. It was the first time Simon viewed constructions using glass and steel. In early 1920, Simon Rodia settled on a wedge shaped plot of land in an area of Los Angeles known as Watts A Labor of Love Simons family left him in 1910. He received a divorce decree in absentia in 1912. Almost ten years are unaccounted for... It is believed that Simon roamed as a bum, hobo and drunkard during those years. Simon Stopped Drinking Some think the Towers were a supreme act of redemption. Some think he just found something to take up the time and money he had since hed gone on the wagon. The Hearts are Everywhere Many feel it was an act of remorse for the loss of his family. Some think of it as an act of love... The hearts, found everywhere, might attes t to this fact. Simons Three Towers The tallest tower is 99 feet 6 inches high, the next tallest is 97 feet 10 inches, the shortest is 55 feet high. Together they contain almost 5,000 joints. There are more than 150 horizontal bands (external loops) There are more than 50 external columns. Construction Method Based on the triangle, Natures Building Block. Simon tied the reinforcements together with copper wire. He worked without scaffolding or ladders using the Towers themselves as his support .
