They play critical roles in the development, maturation and apoptosis of neurons, learning and memory, and the balance of hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis. The classical genomic and the rapid non-genomic mechanisms are involved in the GC effects mentioned above. Moreover, the effects of GC on their targets are determined by the following factors: circulating GC level, corticosteroid-binding- globulin, GC metabolizing enzyme 11B-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase as well as the differential distribution of GC receptors.
