I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to those who
have offered me much help in accomplishing this thesis.
First of all, I am deeply indebted to my supervisor Associate Professor Xu
Qinghong for her kind and consistent help. She has read my early manuscripts
patiently, made detailed comments and gave invaluable suggestions that are
enlightening, encouraging and constructive. Without her help, the completion of the
thesis would have been impossible.

Abstract
Alice Walker is one of the most important contemporary Afro-American writers.
She establishes her reputation as the writer of The Color Purple, which won three
great American literature awards: the National Book Award for fiction, the Rosenthal
Award and the Pulitzer Prize. Her works include poetry, novels, short stories, essays,
and criticism, which are various in thematic choices and profound in the
