* * This slide lists what MPS is not and what the MPS should be. * * * * * * * * * Resources come in many shapes and sizes. The APICS Standard definition for a resource is anything that adds value to a product or service in it’s creation, production or delivery. Ask students to give examples of resources that are used in a production environment, then ask them what would be a resource in a service industry, such as an insurance company, a not for profit professional organization, a hotel, a sports stadium etc. Discuss the students ideas. * * * A Bill of Resources is a listing of the required capacity of a particular resource needed to manufacture one unit of a selected product group. In this example there are five product groups A through E. Each of these product groups places a demand on various resources. These resources consist of water, energy, space, gold, packaging time, laboratory testing time and waster treatment. Each of these resources uses a different unit of resource consumption, for water it is gallons, for energy it is kilowatthour, for space it is cubic feet, for gold it is ounces, for packaging it is machine hours, for laboratory testing it is hours and for waste treatment it is gallons. The Bill of Resources is essentially a matrix that links the amount of resource consumed in the manufacture of one typical (normal) unit of the selected product group. In this example a typical unit of Product Group A requires 2 gallons of water, 50kwh of energy, 100 cubic feet of space, 4 ounces of gold, 20 packaging machine hours, 5 hours of lab testing, and 10 gallons of waste treatment.
