These fractures are often associated with significant soft tissue degloving, metaphyseal bone defects and articular depression. In the present study, we discuss the methods,timing and clinical outcomes of surgical treatment for open pilon fractures. There were 21 men and 7 women with an average age of 36.5 years (range, 19–61 years). Ten patients were injured on the left side, 17 on the right and 1 bilaterally (a closed fracture of the right malleolus（踝） was not counted).
