英语习用语及其翻译中的歧义性   摘要: 该论文将习用语翻译中出现的问题归纳为三类。一类是不求甚解,就习用语的表面意义直译;二是生搬硬套,用意义不合的汉语成语替换;三是忽略了习用语的文化内涵,使译文失去了原文的韵味。论文最后指出只要深入地掌握英语的文化背景知识,才能做好习用语的翻译。   Abstract: The paper explores the problems occurring in the existing translation works. They are classified into three categories as following: 1. Misunderstanding or guessing the meaning literally; 2. Substituting with Chinese counterparts incorrectly; 3. Losing of original flavor. In the end, the paper outlines that more we become knowledgeable about English cultural background, better we can master the translation of English idioms.   关键词: 习语;翻译;歧义性;关联;韵味   Key words: idiom; translation; ambiguity; association; flavor   中图分类号:G642文献标识码:A文章编号:1006-4311(2010)17-0165-02      0foreword   English is heavily idiomatic, English idiom is widely used both in writing and speaking. “Idiom”, the word, is originated from Greek; it means “a special kind of expressing way of human language”, or “ a kind of art of human language”. Its forms can be a few words, a phrase, a clause or a short sentence. Basic on the study of several definitions briefed in different dictionaries and books,the definition of idiom is sorted out as: English idiom is a set of phrases or one sentence, whose meaning is not obvious through knowledge of the individual meaning of the constituent words, but must be learnt as a whole. It is a special phenomenon, which appeared during the long history of language development. In a broad sense, it includes proverb, allusions, allegorical saying, maxim, colloquialism and fixed collocation. The English idioms, from which we know, the culture-specific item, would like to challenge the translator’s proficiency.   Same as human being, Chinese and English people create a lot of idioms that share the meanings; because of the different location, customs, history or logic thinking, there are more English and Chinese idioms cannot be counterparts each other although they present the same meanings literally.
