Abstract The present paper applies the discourse translation theory by Basil Hatim Ian Mason to analyze the English translation of social dialect in Fortress Besieged, with a view to exploring some possible treatments and measures in translating social dialect. This paper thoroughly discusses the social dialect translation in Fortress Besieged in three aspects prescribed by Basil Hatim Ian Mason: communicative transaction, pragmatic action and semiotic interaction, in order to judge the adequacy and appropriateness of the translation in achieving the equivalence in effect, intention and textual coherence respectively. By doing so, this paper ventures to be illustrative, not exhaustive, in applying the discourse translation theory to translation criticism in the social dialect translation. Finally, the paper draws a conclusion that the item-by-item treatment of the translation is not desirable in retaining the effect, intention or coherence in the translated texts. More importantly, this papers advocates due attentions, which should be given to the operational ranks composed of words, phrase and sentence, and the strategic decision making ranks of discourse and sentence groups, when translators are confronting themselves with tough situations. Key words: discourse translation, Fortress Besieged, social dialect 摘 要 本论文拟运用巴塞尔·哈蒂姆和伊恩·梅森提出的语篇翻译理论，探讨小说《围城》英译本中社会方言的翻译，试图评价小说中社会方言翻译的方法。本文从巴塞尔·哈蒂姆和伊恩·梅森语篇翻译理论中“交际转换”、“语用行为”和“符号互动”三个角度，详细地论述了译文在效果、目的和连贯等三方面所取得的等值程度。虽未穷尽该理论所有可能的涉及面，但本文用例证的方式展示语篇翻译理论在评价社会方言翻译上的解释力。最后，本文总结出逐字照搬原文的社会方言会让原文的效果、目的和连贯方面造成损失。更为重要的是，本文提倡译者在翻译一些棘手的语言变体时，可以从操作层面（词、词组和句子）和决策层面（句群和篇章）两个大方面着手。 关键词：语篇翻译，《围城》，社会方言 Contents Acknowledgement …………………………………………………………….……..i Abstract in English…………………………………………………………….……..ii Abstract in Chinese…………………………………………………………………..iii I.
