Chapter 3 Images Objectives Tell the difference between different image representations. Compare different Web graphic file formats. Master the basic image processing skills. Use images on a Web page appropriately. Image representation There are 2 types of image: bitmapped and vector. Bitmap an image is divided into a matrix of pixels. each pixel is assigned a bit pattern. to represent a black and white image, 1 represents white pixel and 0 represents black one. to represent a color image, a pixel is decomposed into three colors (RGB). Image representation For a color image, each pixel has three bit patterns: one to represent the intensity of the red color, one to represent the intensity of the green color, and one to represent the intensity of the blue color. Image representation Vector an image is decomposed into a combination of curves and lines. each curve or line is represented by a mathematical formula. For example, a line may be described by the coordinates of its endpoints, and a circle may be described by the coordinates of its center and the length of its radius. they use much less storage space than bitmap images, but do not look as realistic as bitmap images. Web graphic image format Although there are dozens of graphic file formats out there in the world, only three are supported by web browsers for use on web pages: GIF (pronounced “jiff”) JPEG (pronounced “jay-peg”) PNG (pronounced “ping”) GIF The GIF (Graphic Interchange Format) is the first file format to be supported by web browsers. GIFs are indexed color files with a maximum 8-bit palette capacity, which means that a GIF can contain a maximum of 256 pixel colors. GIF files are most appropriate for graphics that contain areas of flat color, such as logos, cartoon-like illustrations, icons, and line art. Transparent GIFs can be used. Animated GIFs can be used. JPEG JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) files contain 24-bit color information. You can control the amount of compression wh
