Abstract Both English and Chinese are highly advanced languages. Each of them owns a large vocabulary, in which there are many words related to animals. Animals play an indispensable role in human life, so human languages sometimes are related to animal names. But these animal names don’t refer to animal themselves, and they are often endowed with certain cultural connotations. Animals have remarkable features, on which English and Chinese come into agreement, so a lot of animal words have the same or similar meanings in both English and Chinese. However, due to different cultural backgrounds of the two nations for a long time, we inevitably have different associations for some animals. Sometimes a kind of animal owns the same referential meaning, while its cultural meaning is exactly the opposite.
