Lecture 5 Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) “Man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” —The Old Man and The Sea Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) spokesman for the Lost Generation American novelist and short story writer. Winner of Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. His life During WWI, he wanted to join the army but was refused because of his poor eyesight. He served as an ambulance driver in Italy and seriously wounded; After the war, he went to Paris as a reporter, and there influenced by Pound, Gertrude Stein, Sherwood Anderson and some other famous writers, he became a writer. He also worked as a war reporter in the Spanish Civil War and the WWII. In 1954, Nobel Prize for literature. He was injured many times and survived three automobile accidents and two air crashes. From wounds in the war, 237 steel fragments were taken out of his body. In his last years, suffering from emotional breakdown and physical illness, in despair, in 196l, Hemingway killed himself with a hunting gun . The courage to fight with the overwhelming force; though he knows that he will be defeated at last, he decides to act like a hero. He is merely physically defeated but never defeated spiritually.
