English Literature Lecture 6: Percy Bysse Shelley Percy Bysshe Shelley (雪莱)(1792-1822) If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind? Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) Ode to the West Wind Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) One of the leading romantic poets, an intense and original lyrical(抒情诗调的 ) poet in the English language; As far as his lyric poems are concerned, he is regarded as one of the greatest of all English poets. Comments on Shelley Byron, his best friend, said of Shelley “the best and least selfish man I ever knew”. Wordsworth said, “Shelley is one of the best artists of us all”. Some commenters say that Shelley is a beautiful but unrealistic angel. I. Shelley’s Life married Harriet runaway marriage turn to London William Godwin married Mary immoralist forced to leave England in 1818 Shelley’s Life four-year troubles in Italy poor health financial problems restless moving death of his two sons drowned in 1822, buried at Rome near Keats friendship with Byron born in Sussex; father a conservative narrow-minded country gentleman; though gentle by nature, he could not stand any injustice In 1811, expelled from Oxford for an anti-religion pamphlet The Necessity of Atheism《无神论的必然》 at 19, alone in London, homeless. married a 16-year-old schoolgirl Harriet in 1814, broke with Harriet in 1816, married Mary Godwin, daughter of radical philosopher Godwin in 1818, Shelley’s happy marriage was broken by the sudden death of Harriet who jumped into a river. The scandal made by political enemies compelled Shelley to leave England again, then he lived in Italy to support the independence wars of Italy, Spain and Greece. in 1816 met Byron in 1822.
