1. Academic Award Speech I’m very grateful to receive this award for “best actress”. I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate this great honor. There are many people I’d like to thank. First of all, I want to thank my parents for bringing me into this world. I also want to express my gratitude to all of my teachers over the years, but especially to my acting teacher, Jim Jones, who taught me everything I know. I also want to thank my husband, for his understanding and kindness. And finally, I want to express my appreciation to all of my friends for their support, especially to Martin Miller, for being there when I needed him. This award means a great deal to me. Words can’t express how honored I feel at this moment. I will remember this night for the rest of my life! When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself, “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “no” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something. Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important thing I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life,because almost everything--allxternal expectations, all pride,all fear of embarrassment or failure--these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.
