Public Speaking Unit 7 Beginning and Ending the Speech Contents Introduction Conclusion Introduction Get the audience’s attention Establish the need Reveal the topic and your interest or point of view Establish credibility and good will with the audience Preview the body of the speech Introduction 1. Get the audience’s attention Choose a relevant yet interesting fact, statistic, quote or anecdote to begin your introduction. Don’t choose anything that’s common knowledge; rather, discuss something new that will hold the listeners’ attention immediately. Introduction 1. Get the audience’s attention Attention-getters narrative??????? humor quotation rhetorical question???? startling statement???? arouse curiosity reference to audience, occasion, or current events, previous speech Introduction 2. Establish the need Create desire on the part of the audience to listen. Answer the questions: “Why should I care?” and “How does this topic relate to me?”? Show the scope of the issue, the degree of importance, and the ramifications. Introduction 3. Reveal the topic and your interest or point of view State your thesis or main point immediately after your interesting opener. When writing a good thesis, ask yourself these questions: What do you want the listeners to agree with? Why are you the speaker? What is your opinion on the issue? What is the strongest argument to convince them? Is your side on the issue strong enough? Are they likely to disagree? If so, how can you counter their arguments? Introduction 4. Establish Credibility and Good Will with the Audience Assert your credibility in one sentence. Without being boastful, simply state why you’re qualified to talk about the given subject. Introduction 5. Preview the body of the speech Give your audience a glimpse of your supporting arguments and reasons. Summarize each in one sentence apiece. Tell your listeners about each supporting point in the order in which they will hear them in the body of the
