Tea and Tea Culture I. Tea in phonetics About its name globally, words for tea fall into two main different groups . One is Te, from tê in the Amoy dialect, spoken in Fujian Province and Taiwan. It reached the West from the port of Xiamen (Amoy), once a major port of contact with European traders such as the Dutch, who spread it to Western Europe. The other is Cha from the Cantonese chàh, spoken in Guangzhou Port (Canton) and the ports of Hong Kong and Macau, which are also major points of contact especially with the Portuguese. They spread it to India in the 16th century. The Korean and Japanese words cha come from the Mandarin chá. II. Tea in culture Tea is acclaimed as a blessing of the heaven because it concerns more with human soul rather than to be basically considered as a drink to ease thirst. A single cup of tea will convey a rich meaning combined with all the ideas of Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism and at the same time stimulates rich imagination. In tasting tea, people experience various qualities of human and of nature, a pure mind, the flexible human qualities, a peaceful natural environment of mountains and rivers, and other life reflections, all of which are delivered in a simple sipping. Tasting tea is also compared to experience of one’s own. Another good fulfillment of virtue of tea is found in the Chinese saying “仁者乐山，智者乐水” .Chinese tea culture has establishes itself as a unique and extraordinary cultural existence. Interpretation of 茶禅一味 Mostly tea grows in high mountains and is nurtured with pure essence from the nature. This quality of cleanness is always connected to purity of human quality. Drinking tea is a process of soul cleaning and is just like a road of practising zen or meditation, which concerns more with human soul and is supposed to have an effect to help lift up people’s souls.
