Advanced English 2010 Lesson IV Everyday Use for your grandmama by Alice Walker Churn Background Information (February 9, 1944 - ) Author, Walker, Alice (1944- ), American author, poet and activist, most of whose writing portrays the lives of poor, oppressed African American women in the early 1900s. Alice Malsenior Walker born in Georgia, best known perhaps as the author of The Color Purple, was the eighth child of Georgia sharecroppers. After a childhood accident blinded her in one eye, she went on to become valedictorian of her local school, and attend Spelman College and Sarah Lawrence College on scholarships, graduating in 1965. she was educated at Spelman and Sarah Lawrence colleges. Walkers experiences during her senior year at Sarah Lawrence, including undergoing an abortion and making a trip to Africa, provided many of the books themes, such as love, suicide, civil rights, and Africa.
