Final election: The electors vote weeks after the election in December (first Monday after the second Wednesday in December). They meet in their state capitals and cast votes for president and vice president. To win, a candidate must get 270 electoral votes, out of the total of 538. If no candidate gets a majority, the House of Representatives picks the president, and the Senate picks the vice president. Requirements and traditions of presidential election: A president must be at least 35 years old, a natural born citizen, and a resident of the United States for a minimum of 14 years; A president is elected by delegates to the electoral college ( e.g. electors) not directly by the people. The Electoral College: How It Works When voters cast their ballots in a U.S. presidential election, they arent electing the president directly. The names of the presidential candidate are on the ballot. But the votes go to choose electors--members of the Electoral College--who are pledged to those candidates.
