The government departments do not believe Sam is capable of raising a child, so they take Lucy away. Sam becomes pretty sad. The lawyer learns a lot from deep communication with Sam, such as patience and listening, she even cries to Sam about her husband who is a player. The relationship between them becomes closer gradually. At the trial, Sam breaks down after opposing counsel’s advice that he is not capable enough for being a father. The result is as simple as it is tragic: They are defeated in Court. After the trial, Lucy resides in a foster home with Randy Carpenter, but tries to convince Sam to help her run away, and continually escapes in the middle of the night to go to Sams apartment, whereupon he immediately returns her after she sleeps soundly. Ultimately, the foster family who planned to adopt Lucy decide to return her to Sam, with an arrangement that Randy will help him raise her. The final scene depicts a soccer game, refereed by Sam, in which lovely girl Lucy participates as a player. In attendance are the foster family, Sams friendship group, and a newly-single Rita with her son. Sam: Yeah, but I tried, I tried hard. Rita: Try harder!
