Symbolism (象征) Symbolism is one of the devices that enrich short fiction and compensate for its briefness in space. A symbol is a thing that suggests more than its literal meaning. In literature almost anything—particular objects, characters, setting , and actions—can be symbolic if the author wishes to make it so by either hinting or insisting that the material means more than it literally does. For example, ring is a symbol of eternity. Rose is a symbol of love. Characterization Bobinot: --- A patient, good father, a considerate husband. He is quite traditional. He seems to be bound by the marriage too. Calixta: ---Know sewing– a traditional wife in some aspect. --- Show great concerns to her husband and son. She loves them. --- She is pure and passionate (In Alcee’s eye). --- She is a scrupulous wife and mom.(in her husband’s eye) --- Calixta is a woman who is repressed and tied to her husband.
