Ab strac :t Based on the analysis of wt o high-resistance earth faults occurred in EastChina PowerG rid, the lmi itation
of the impedance relay ispointed out. It is considered that the ability of the impedance relay of quadrangle characte-r
istic to stand the transition resistance is not as good as expected because of the current assistance from the opposite
power supply, and the sensitiveness of the spli-t phase current differential protection is far better than that of the mi -
pedance protection. The irreplaceablility of the zero-sequence currentprotection in the system is also demonstrated.
