It celebrates the passing of a peaceful year and indicates the welcome of a new year. How do we celebrate the New Year? First, the elaborate multi-generation reunion dinner eaten leisurely and luxuriously at home is the norm. The reunion dinner eaten on New Year’s Eve is the most significant meal of the year. It underscores the supreme importance of the family (in Chinese culture). Visiting relatives and close friends is another time-honored custom that is undertaken cheerfully, and reciprocated enthusiastically too, as a thoughtful way of affirming the ties of kinship and friendship. What would be retained in our New Year celebration is the family and kinship ties and attendant values like respect for one’s parents and elders.
