African-American Civil Rights Movement Class:one Name:Emma THE BACKGROUND OF THE MOVEMENT After white dominated Democratic Party regained polotical control over the south..The Republic partythe Party of Lincolnwhich had been the party that most blacks belonged to shrank to insignificance black voter registration was suppressed. By the early 20th century, almost all elected officials in the South were Democrats. During the same time as African Americans were being disfranchised, white Democrats imposed racial segregation by law. Violence against blacks mushroomed. A movement was brewing SEGREGATION Segreation bacame common in Southern states following the end of Reconstruction in 1877. These states began to pass local and state laws that specified certain places for Whites only and others for Colored. Between 1890 and 1910, all Southern states passed laws imposing requirements for voting. These were used to prevent African Americans from voting, in spite of 15th Amendent, which had been designed to protect African American voting rights. A brife introduction of the movement A movement in the united states aimed at outlawing racial discrimination against African-Americans and restoring voting rights to them. Movement was charaterised by campaigns of civil resistance(non-violent resistance) The famous leader of the Civil Rights Movement was Martin Luther King Jr. Notable achievment was the passing of The Civil Rights Act Of 1964: banned discrimination based on race, color, religion of national origin Variety Events The Montgomery Bus Boycott.
