It is a Christian Holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus. But many people who are not religious also celebrate Christmas. Christmas Traditions Every country has slightly different Christmas traditions, so now we’ll focus on US traditions. For people who are religious, the most important tradition is to go to a church service on Christmas day. But there are many other non religious traditions as well. Christmas Traditions Santa Claus- Began with Saint Nicholas a Bishop who gave money and gifts to poor Children. People liked the story and it spread to countries all around Europe then the world. The Red cape and white beard came from Russia. Has become the symbol of gift giving and charity for Christmas. Christmas Traditions Christmas Tree Originated in 16th Century Germany. Supposed to decorate trees to depict religious events. It was brought to England in 1800s and soon spread to the US. Now people like decorating trees with all types of small decorations (lights, ropes, ornaments) Many people will decorate the outside of their homes with lights.
