The 2003 edition of the Manual of Style supersedes all previous editions. Origin and Development of the Manual of Style The first edition of the Manual of Style was issued in 1972 and was primarily based upon The Chicago Manual of Style. The second edition, published in 1986, was an update and expansion of the 1972 edition, and again it was primarily based upon The Chicago Manual of Style. The January 2000 edition of the Manual of Style was extensively revised, based on the ANSI/SES Recommended Practice for Standards Designation and Organization. The April 2000 edi- tion of the Manual of Style incorporated changes to correct editorial errors and further clarify the requirements for definitions and notes. The 2003 edition of the Manual of Style incorporates the following changes: • Individual chapters are now permitted to contain administrative text in the first section (see Section 1.7). • All definitions must appear in Chapter 3, but they are also permitted to appear in the ad- ministrative section of a chapter (see
