1 INTRODUCTION CHIEF OF AIR FORCE OUR AIR FORCE HAS ALWAYS TRAINED GREAT PILOTS. BUT A GREAT AIR FORCE NEEDS MORE THAN GREAT PILOTS. I am immensely proud of the Royal Australian Air Force. Everywhere, every day, our people are ready to serve our nation around the world. Globally, Air Force has between 500 and 700 people on operations each day, contributing to coalition operations, peacekeeping and humanitarian and disaster relief. Our people achieve exceptional results every day, amidst one of the largest changes to our aircraft fl eet in our 92 year history. By 2030, almost every single aircraft in the Air Force fl eet is scheduled to have a systems upgrade, or be replaced. Air Force is already retraining and reskilling for the next generation of capability – the introduction of the F-35A Joint Strike Fighter, EA-18G Growler, C-27J Spartan battlefi eld airlifter and P8-A Poseidon will greatly increase the options for the delivery of air and space power in the future. In the future, aircraft will be even more complex and capable, and our relationships with our allies and industry partners will continue to grow in importance as we keep pace with technological change and innovation. Our Air Force has always trained great pilots. But a great Air Force needs more than great pilots. The people of our Air Force – 18,900 permanent, reserve and civilian men and women across our offi ces, headquarters and 11 major bases – who deliver and manage strategy, operations, engineering, logistics and support are the people that make great air power possible. Our people are respectful, inclusive and strive to maintain the high expectations and trust that the Australian public have in us. No matter what challenges the future brings, I am confi dent that the people of Air Force will continue to innovate while upholding the fi nest traditions of our service, to ensure air power option
