Born in a family of astrologers of the Western Han Dynasty(202B.C.-9A.D.), Sima Qian, the author of the venerable Records of the Historian, was greatly inspired at his young age by the ambition of his father as the royal Grand Astrologer, and inherited his father’s dying wish to accomplish the masterpiece from his thirties to fifties. Sina Qian lived during the reigns of Emperor Ling (r. 156B.C.-140B.C.) and Emperor Wu(r.140B.C.-r.86B.C.), but no record of the dates of his birth and death can be found in the historical documents. ;Standing first among the Twenty-four Histories, the official chronicles of China from the remote antiquity to the Ming Dynasty(1368-1644),Records of the Historian was the first general history in form of series of biographies to appear in China.
