Introduction Probiotics are micro-organisms which bestow health benefits on the host when administered in adequate amounts. The most common probiotics include lactic acid bacteria. Various fermented vegetables and dairy products contain a variety of lactic acid bacteria that were shown to provide health benefits and improvements to a certain level? Innovation In previous studies, the effects of lactic acid bacteria on influenza include partial survival protection or prolonged survival periods. It remains unknown whether treatments with lactic acid bacteria can confer improved protection by reducing weight loss of infected animals and thus ameliorating morbidity. Abstract In the present study, we determined whether the?Lactobacillus plantarum?DK119 (DK119) newly isolated from the fermented vegetable food “Kimchi” would confer enhanced protection against the subsequent influenza virus infection via the intranasal or oral administration. The antiviral efficacy of DK119 was evaluated by monitoring weight changes, and examining lung viral loads and histology.
