History and Anthology of American Literature For English Majors Grade 2008 Emily Dickinson (1830 – 1886) Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) A poetic innovator A secluded poetess “Mother” of American Poetry and American Modern Poetry Her life prominent family background Good education Began writing seriously in her twenties 1775 poems altogether, 7 published in her life mysteriously secluded life life Born into one of Amherst, Massachusetts’ most prominent families on 10 December 1830. Her father, a Yale graduate, successful lawyer, Treasurer for Amherst College and a United States Congressman The Dickinsons were strong advocates for education and Emily too benefited from an early education in classic literature, studying the writings of Virgil and Latin, mathematics, history, and botany. At the age of seventeen Emily left for South Hadley, Massachusetts to attend the Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. She stayed there less than a year and some of the theories as to why she left are homesickness and poor health. Her mysteriously secluded life Volume of her works Author of over 1700 poems, only 10 were published in her lifetime, and these without her permission. After her death, however, her sister found and published the body of her work. Her perspective on poetry: If I read a book and it makes my body so cold no fire can ever warm me, I know that is poetry. If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off I know that is poetry. A poet of inwardness Dickinson explores the inner life of the individual and pays attention to only one region “New England”. To say that Dickinson is a poet of inwardness is simply to recognize that her own thoughts and feelings are her most important subjects; moreover, her treatment of them avoids all reference to the relevant social or philosophical issues of her day. I’m Nobody! Who Are You? Dickinson expresses her brief evaluation of public fame in this poem I’m nobody! Who are you? Are you nobody
