The movement underwent three phases in its brief yet immensely important history. It first begun in London in the years 1908-1909. The second phase of the movement was the period of some three years (1912-1914). The third phase of Imagism(1914-1917). Three Imagist poetic principles: Direct treatment of the “thing,” whether subject or objective. To use absolutely no word that does not contribute to the presentation. As regarding rhythm, to compose in the sequence of the musical phrase, not in sequence of a metronome. What is the Image as the Imagists saw it? T. E. Hulme said that the image must enable one “to dwell and linger upon a point of excitement, to achieve the impossible and convert a point a line.” Pound define an image as that which presents an intellectual and emotional complex in an instant of time, and later he extended this definition when he stated that an image was “a vortex or cluster of fused ideas” “endowed with energy”.
