He had little education and educated himself through self-study while helping with his father’s work on the farm. After his father’s death, Burns working as the chief labourer in the family. In 1786,in order to raise money to buy a ship ticket to Jamaica. He published his first collection of poems and immediately won great fame. He gave up his idea to emigrate to Jamaica and went to Edinburgh to publish his second collection of poems. He was welcomed by the intellectuals and the gentry class of Edinburgh. Burns supported the French Revolution and in 1792 he sent four small guns to Paris to pay tribute to the revolutionary government. But they were intercepted by the customhouse and this brought Burns into clash with the government. Burns devoted the last 12 years of his life to collecting Scottish folk songs. Burns reputation He is an excellent native poet of Scotland. He is regarded as a pioneer of the romantic movement and after his death became a great source of inspiration to the founders of both liberalism and socialism. A cultural icon in Scotland and among the Scottish Diaspora around the world, celebration of his life and work became almost a national charismatic cult during the 19th and 20th centuries, and his influence has long been strong on Scottish. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland , and celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is also in English and a “light” Scots dialect, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland.
