PreRomanticism The 18th Century Literature in England The classification of 18th century English literature In the early 18th century, classicism was prevailed(盛行) In the 1720s, enlightenment literature developed rapidly In the middle of the 18th century, sentimentalism literature was popular In the late 18th century, preromanticism literature appeared Classicism The Enlightenment Movement brought about a revival of interest in the old classical works , it’s known as classicism. The classicists held that forms of literature were to be modeled after the classical works of the ancient Greek and Roman writers, such as Homer. The representatives of classicists: Addison, Steele, Pope The three stages of enlightenment literary development in 18th century In the early enlightenment (1688--the first half of the 18th century) In the middle enlightenment (1740s--1750s) In the late enlightenment (1760s--1780s) In the early enlightenment(1688--the first half of the 18th century) Though classicism took a large part of the English literature, modern novel had a great achievement in this period. The representatives of this stage: Daniel Defoe (1661-1731,Robinson Crusoe) Jonathan Swift (1667-1745,Gulliver’s Travels) Alexander Pope (1688-1744,The Rape of the Lock) In the middle enlightenment (1740s—1750s) In this period, the novel had a highest achievement. Representatives: Samuel Richardson(1689-1761), the first sentimentalism novelist. His work Clarissa created psychological novel and family novel, pay attention to the details about emotion. Henry Fielding(1707-1754), the outstanding novelist and dramatist. It’s common to use humor and funny skill in his works. The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling , which reflected the life of different classes and the spirit of optimism. The three founders of English modern novel: Richardson, Fielding, Defoe In the late enlightenment (1760s-1780s) Sentimentalism Sentimentalism concentrated on emotion and sentiment
