Spring Sowing(春耕)作者及爱尔兰简介

Spring Sowing About the author Liam OFlaherty was born in Ireland in 1896. He wrote in English and Irish. In 1923, OFlaherty published his first novel, Thy Neighbours Wife, thought to be one of his best. In 1935, his novel The Informer (for which he had been awarded the 1925 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction) was made into a film of the same name. He also published some short story collections. About the author OFlaherty died on 7 September 1984, in Dublin, and many of his works were subsequently republished. He is remembered today as a powerful writer and a strong voice in Irish culture. In 2006 a memorial garden was built in his native village, with a plaque describing his life and writings. About the author The themes of OFlaherty came from his experience of growing up in the extremely poor community in Ireland, and during which his character and writing style were affected a lot. With realism style, his writing is natural, mysterious and romantic. He said: I was born in a storm-swept rock and hate the soft growth of sun-baked lands where has no frost in mens bones. The History of Ireland The whole island of Ireland formed a constituent part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 1801 to 1922. For almost all of this period, Ireland was governed by the Parliament of the UK through its Dublin Castle administration in Ireland. Ireland faced considerable economic difficulties in the 19th century, including the Great Famine of the 1840s. The late 19th century and early 20th century saw a vigorous campaign for Irish Home Rule. Ireland and Northern Ireland Several centuries ago, the UK annexed and colonized Ireland. Being cruelly massacred, Irish people were forced to flee to North America. When Southern Ireland gained independence from UK, the people in Northern Ireland were almost Englishmen. Thus, when Northern Ireland voted to decide its future, with no doubt, the mayority of Englishmen decided to remain Northern Ireland as a territory
