S t e p a n o v UDC 539.432+620 An analysis is presented of the influence of wave processes in gases and in a pipeline wall on extended fracture byfast crack propagation. The influence of design and technological parameters of the pipeline and of the pipe metal fracture toughness on the extent of fracture is shown. Due to gas and product pipeline accidents, which are accompanied by extended fractures and lead to heavy material losses, the development of design and technological methods of preventing such fractures or limiting their extent is vital. The same problems arise in the prevention of extended fractures caused by crack propagation in sheet elements of various large-size structures. The problem is generally solved by using steels with improved physical and mechanical properties and enhanced resistance to brittle fracture. It gives a positive result for a limited range of temperatures, element sizes, and operational loads. In a number of cases crack arresters are used, e.g., mono- and multilayer inserts (in main pipelines), which guarantee the arrest of ductile cracks within the limits of their length [1,2].
