A Draft International Standard (DIS) for the new ISO 45001 has been published The international standard ISO 45001, which may supersede BS OHSAS 18001, has now reached the status of Draft International Standard (DIS). The new standard establishes requirements for occupational safety and health protection management systems, and is expected to become effective as of late 2016 / early 2017. The underlying idea in its preparation is that this standard is to be applicable to both small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as large and complex organisations. This was taken into account by almost 100 experts in the preparation of ISO 45001 standard. The risk-based approach of ISO 45001 should thus be easy for SMEs to adopt, and is in line with the approach taken by OHSAS 18001. In contrast to the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards, however, there will be no formal transitional process from existing ISO standards. An effort will be made to facilitate the transition from OHSAS 18001 to ISO 45001 for organisations. These changes can be anticipated compared to BS OHSAS 18001: Simpler and more effective implementation in the companys existing management systems thanks to the “high-level structure”. In addition to their own employees, companies must also take into account the working conditions along their value-added chain. This means that local contractors will be more strongly integrated into the existing industrial safety management system.
