Ecient Implementation of Weighted ENO Schemes 1 2 Guang-Shan Jiang and Chi-Wang Shu Division of Applied Mathematics Brown University Providence, Rho de Island 02912 Abstract In this pap er, we further analyze, test, mo dify and improve the high order WENO (weighted essentially non-oscillatory) nite dierence schemes of Liu, Osher and Chan [9]. It w as shown by Liu et al. that WENO schemes constructed from the rth order 1 th (in L norm) ENO schemes are ( r + 1) order accurate. We prop ose a new way of measuring the smo othness of a numerical solution, emulating the idea of minimizing the total variation of the approximation, which results in a 5th order WENO scheme th for the case r = 3, instead of the 4 order with the original smo othness measurement by Liu et al. This 5th order WENO scheme is as fast as the 4th order WENO scheme of Liu et al. and, b oth schemes are ab out twice as fast as the 4th order ENO schemes on vector sup ercomputers and as fast on serial and parallel computers. For Euler sys- tems of gas dynamics, we suggest to compute the weights from pressure and entropy instead of the characteristic values to simplify the costly characteristic pro cedure.
