Abstract
This pap er attempts to dene an objectoriented database system It describ es the
main features and characteristics that a system must have to qualify as an ob ject
oriented database system
We have separated these characteristics into three groups
Mandatory the ones the system must satisfy in order to b e termed an ob ject
oriented database system These are complex ob jects ob ject identity encapsula
tion typ es or classes inheritance overriding combined with late binding extensi
bilit y computational completeness p ersistence secondary storage management
concurrency recovery and an ad hoc query facilit y
Optional the ones that can b e added to make the system b etter but which are
not mandatory These are multiple inheritance typ e checking and inferencing
distribution design transactions and versions
Open the p oints where the designer can make a numb er of choices These are
the programming paradigm the representation system the typ e system and
uniformity
We have taken a p osition not so much exp ecting it to b e the nal word as to erect
a provisional landmark to orient further debate
