The Special Experience of John Forbes Nash, Jr. In 1994, two mathematicians, John Nash and Harold Kuhn, visited their old bedridden teacher. After the conversation, Mr. Kuhn secretly told the teacher a message which had not been known by Mr. Nash, Mr. Nash would be awarded a Nobel Prize in Economics for the profound contribution to economic field. The prize surprised the world, not just because the Nobel-winning thesis was contained in a slender 27Ph.D. thesis written almost half a century ago by Mr. Nash, but because the winner, Mr. Nash, could receive the prize after more than 30 years’ torment of paranoid schizophrenia. Decades ago, whenMr. Nash was at the top of his profession, theterrifying disease happened to him. It ruined both his professional and personal life. Hesuffered so much from illusions that he had to stop his work and stayed in isolation. With the protection of his families and friends, 20 years later, he gradually conquered the disease and came back to the public. He has seldom talked about his illness directly and people would also prefer to concern his achievements rather than his illness.The Early Years of Mr. NashBorn in West Virginia, Mr. Nash was essentiallyan unworldly man. Mr. Nash’s mother was a Latin teacher, and his father was an electrical engineer. They paid most attention to Mr. Nash and his younger sister’s education. From Mr. Nash’ childhood, he was regarded as a prodigy but not a pedant. He was good at dealing with problems from different perspectives. In1945, Mr. Nash entered Carnegie Tech where he changed his major from chemistry to math. There he was called “a young Gauss” and “genius” for his excellence.The Brightest Period of Mr. NashIn 1948, Mr. Nash entered the doctoral program at Princeton where there were many prominent mathematician and scientists, including John von Neumann.As Mr. Nash lacked in sociality, other students thought him odd.
