Abstract: Desertification is a serious phenomenon of environmental degradation on a global scale. It
is very mi portant to evaluate the situation of desertification accurately, tmi ely and comprehensively in
certain regions. Remote sensing information isw idely used in the study of desertification evaluation
on account of itsmerits in its cyclica,l m acro and systematic aspects. This paper has summarized the
desertification evaluation technologiesw ith remote sensing, including visual interpretation, the vege
tation index- based desertification evaluation techn iques, themu lti- index- based comprehensive e
valuation techn iques and the evaluation techniques based on landscape ecology theory. F inally, the
paper also has been concerned w ith the problems and prospects of desertification evaluation technolo
giesw ith remote sensing.
