The research on the functional areas of brain in hyperparathyroidism patients with neuropsychiatric symptoms Zhang Lihong1, Zhang Ling2, Li Haitao3, Bian Shizhu4, Chen Bing1 (1Department of Endocrinology, 2Outpatient Department, 3 Department of Radiology, Southwest Hospital, Third Military Medical University; 4Department of Cardiology, Xinqiao Hospital, Third Military Medical University,Chongqing,400038, China) [Abstract] Objective To investigate the spontaneous brain function characteristics in basic state and explore the relationships between emotional disorders, spontaneous brain resting activities, biochemical and biological characteristics. Methods Fifty one patients were diagnosed with primary hyperthyroidism as cases and another 51 age-matched healthy individuals as control. All patients were given Hamilton Depression Scale scanning (HAMD)and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) assessment of neuropsychiatric symptoms at the same day. We used a novel method based on ReHo to detect unpredicted homodynamic responses across the whole brain on rs-fMRI data and then to analyze the differences of ReHo between cases and control. Results Three significantly decreased ReHo areas including frontal gyrus, orbital frontal, temporal pole and one significantly enhanced ReHo area (cerebellar vermis) in patients with hyperthyroidism have been observed compared with control. ReHo values in cerebellar vermis were significant different in patients with different severity of anxiety. ReHo value is closely related with FT3, FT4 and sleep qualityin temporal pole; ReHo value in frontal gyrus is related with sleep disorders. Conclusions There are dysfunctional brain areas in resting state in patients with hyperthyroid
