1920’s Slang • All wet = wrong arguing a mistaken notion • Cat’s meow = anything wonderful • Banana Oil = nonsense • Bee’s Knees = a superb person or thing • Belly Laugh = a loud uninhibited laugh • Blind Date - same as today • Big Cheese = an important person • Bull Session = an informal group discussion • Bump Off = to murder • Cake-eater = a ladies man • Cheaters = eyeglasses • Copacetic = excellent • Darb = an excellent person • Dumb Dora = a girl who is perceived to be unintelligent • Dogs = human feet • Drugstore Cowboy = a fashionably dressed idler who hangs around public places trying to pick up girls • Fall Guy = a person who takes the blame for wrong doing of others • Flapper = a typical young woman of the 1920’s with bobbed hair, short skirts and rolled stockings • Flat Tire – dull boring person • Gam = a girl’s leg (French) • Gatecrasher = a person who attends a party w/o an invitation or show w/o paying • Flat Tire = dull, boring person • Giggle Water = an alcoholic drink • Hebbie-Jeebies = the jitters • Hep = wise • High-Hat = to snub • Hooch = bootleg liquor • Hoofer = chorus girl • Horsefeathers = nonsense • Hotsy-Tosty = pleasing • Jake – okay (“Everything’s jake.”) • Jalopy = an old car • Keen = attractive, appealing • Kiddo = a familiar form of address • Kisser = the mouth • Line = insincere flattery • Lounge Lizard = a ladies man • Main Drag = the most important street in a town or city • Neck = to caress intimately • Ossified = drunk • Pinch = to arrest • Pushover = a person or thing easily overcome • Ritzy = elegant, the Ritz (London Hotel) • Scram = to leave hurriedly (to scramble) • Sheba = a young woman with sex appeal • Sheik = a young man with sex appeal • Smeller = the nose • Speak-easy = a saloon or bar selling bootleg whiskey • Pinc
