Ichinose Seismological Laboratory MS 174 University of Nevada Reno, NV 89557-0141 phone (702) 784-4361 fax (702) 784-1766 email ichinose@seismo.unr.edu -2- Introduction Geophysical surveys provide an important tool for the analysis of sedimentary basins, from defining broad basin geometry to identifying individual stratigraphic units which represent thousands of years of uninterrupted basin deposition [Christine-Blick and Biddle, 1985]. A 1996 University of Nevada Reno geophysics field course of ten graduate and undergraduate students provides a unique opportunity to investigate basin features using a multitude of geophysical techniques. The techniques included in this paper are potential field methods: magnetics and gravity, seismic imaging: shallow multichannel seismic reflection and refraction, and electromagnetic methods: shallow terrain conductivity and transient electromagnetics. There is a poor consensus on the Cenozoic kinematics of the Death Valley Region and the Basin Range. This has lead to several conflicting tectonic theories based on various controversial observational constraints.
