He was greatly influenced by his family, and he received good education due to the prosperity of his family. Milton was proficient in Latin, Greek, French, Italian, and Hebrew, and was an excellent swordsman. At age 16 Milton entered Christs College, Cambridge. On the charismas of 1629,he composed On The Morning Of Christs Nativity. Perhaps the finest student in his class, Milton received his M.A. in 1632. After he took his Master of Arts, he retired to his father’s country house at Horton, and devoted himself for six years (1632-1638) to private study and literary composition. At twenty-nine(1638) Milton set out for a tour on the continent, he met Galileo in France and greatly inspired by him. Milton’s tour of Europe was cut short with the rumors of civil war in England. On his return, he began writing pamphlets on political and religious matters headed by of reformation in England, in which he urged the necessity of thorough religious reform. In 1642 Milton married Mary Powell, but the marriage was an unhappy one. Mary paid her family a visit and refused to return. Milton wrote his so called “divorce traces” speaking for divorce. In 1643 Milton published a series of pamphlets on marriage and divorce. In 1644,he wrote Areopagitica, as a declaration of people’s freedom of the press. In 1651,his first Defence of English People was in print. Milton’s work act as the spokesman of the revolution. In 1652, he become totally blind due to overwork. In 1656, Milton married again Katherine Woodcock, but she died in childbirth a few years later. For her he wrote his only love poem, a sonnet, On His Deceased Wife(1658). After the Restoration of Charles the second, Milton’s political career started to slide down. Then, he was arrested and imprisoned. In 1655 he finished his masterpiece Paradise Lost with the help of his daughters. In 1672, another epic Paradise Regained was published. It was less popular than the former.
