* FLOW-3D serves a wide range of application in hydraulics:River hydraulics: Determining the flow patterns in rivers is important for a number of reasons. Engineers are frequently faced with river redesigns which require knowledge of flow velocities and gradients, recirculation zones and high scour regions. Safety and Operations: Dam recertification may be necessary when probable mean flood conditions change. For example, a spillway apron is designed for a particular flow condition which assumes the flow falls within a known area. Physical testing is often done to verify the flow impingement zone on the apron and loads are determined. Since physical testing is very expensive, CFD provides a much quicker way to revalidate a design at the new flow conditions by simulating the impingement point and the loads on various structures. Aquaculture: Mussel farming may require nutrient distribution to the mussels to ensure their healthy development. The scalar transport model allows nutrient distribution under a variety of conditions to be modeled. A range of nutrient concentration levels can be simulated and the local concentration and dissipation levels determined. Sediment Scour: Sediment scour can be a serious problem in storm events. When a storm event occurs, flow conditions may cause sediment and soil to erode from around support structures causing them to fail. Moving Gates: Moving structures in hydraulic designs are particularly challenging for designers since the flow conditions can be highly transient and the resulting loads have a significant impact on the design. FLOW-3D has a unique capability which allows structures to be modeled with either a specified motion or their motion can be determined from a fully coupled fluid-structure interaction model.
