Unit5.Engine Lubricating System 1.Purposes of Lubrication The purposes of lubricating oil used in gasoline and diesel engines are of lubricating，cooling， cleaning and sealing various parts within the engines. 1.1 Oil Lubricating The most important function of the oil is to lubricate the parts in contact with each other.As engine Parts move close together，they produce friction.Lubricating oil helps to reduce frictional power and wear between two parts，if used correctly. 1.2 Oil Cooling Lubricating oil is designed to effectively carry away the excess heat produced by moving engine parts.As the lubricating oil passes over a hot engine part，it removes a great amount of heat.The heat carried by the oil is transferred to the cooler crankcase oil located in the oil pan. Here heat is dissipated through the oil pan to the outside air.If ubricating oil is lacking within the engine，the excess heat can not be removed by oil.The engine may overheat. 1.3 Oil Cleaning It is also very important to keep all engine parts clean and free of carbon and dirt.As particles of Dirt get into the engine，the lubricating oil helps to remove these particles and send them to an oil filter. Most of the physical dirt that gets into the engine comes from blow-by. The dirt and dust also come in through the air filter must be removed from the engine and sent to the oil filter. 1.4 Oil Sealing Lubricating oil inside the engine produces a film on the moving parts.This film acts as aprotective sealing agent in the vital ring zone area.Oil located on the cylinder walls and rings produces a seal between the two.The oil actually occupies the space between the two moving parts.Without oil，compression gases would escape into the crankcase area. 2.Contaminants in the Engine Many contaminants get into the engine oil.They must be controlled.This means that in order to reduce the amount of contaminants in the engine either the oil system must be well designed or the oil must be filtered.To understand the lubrica
