Some of his tales have left a visible imprint on such major English authors as H. G. Wells. His relationship to Chinese literature is not insignificant. Modern Chinese masters like Lu Xun and Guo Moruo were influenced by him. ;POETIC THEORY;3. The tone of its highest manifestation is one of sadness. “Melancholy is thus the most legitimate of all the poetical tones.” 4. Death is the most melancholy subject available for a poet, and that the death of a beautiful woman is “unquestionably the most poetical topic in the world.” ; Music is essential because it is associated with indefinite sensations. Poe defines poetry as “the rhythmical creation of beauty,” indicating that only in music can a man comes closest to attaining what he calls “supernatual beauty.” (The fascination of his verse is due to the fact that he was a master in securing emotional effects with his sad music. He wedded his songs of the death of beautiful women to the most wonderful melodies, which at times almost transcend the limits of language and pass into the realm of pure music.) ;6. Poe made good use of a number of poetic devices to create a mood appropriate to the theme of his poems.
