To this day, Confessions of a Mask is heralded as an epoch-making homosexual novel that is the first work in modern Japan to depict homosexual love in a realistic way. In 1949, when the work first appeared, however, literary critics were indifferent to this homosexual motif. Meanwhile general readers were curious. The coexistence of conflicting responses has as a backdrop the limited contemporary homosexual discourse and a pervasive heterosexual ideology. Then in 1951, when Mishimas Forbidden Colors (Kinjiki, 1951-1953) creates a homosexual social phenomenon, the literary establishment begins to pay attention to the homosexual motif and retroactively reevaluates Confessions of a Mask as the origin of Mishimas oeuvre. What I reveal through this paper is that the model for current literary interpretations of Confessions of a Mask emerges from a reproduced discourse that emerged in the 1950s after Forbidden Colors appeared in print.
