Enterprises need to break the organization shaft
Everyone loves to hiss at corporate villains, especially during scandals. 5 years ago, the object of ridicule was the evil of the banking industry. Then, when British oil (BP) had a terrible oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, people became more anxious and sought out who was the villain.
Now, people are starting to target, this time GM. The carmaker failed to recall the faulty ignition switches of several models in time, even though some workers knew about the technical problems 10 years ago. Recently, a former federal prosecutor Anton Valukas? (Anton Valukas) general motors this disgraceful failure published a 315 page report.
In a report published earlier, some observers expect Mr Valukas would expose the dastardly evildoers. After all, it is said that it is difficult to imagine that, without intentional misconduct, this kind of corporate error can exist for so long and cause a lot of unnecessary deaths.
However, Mr Valukas not these events attributed to a criminal conspiracy, but blame the structure in GM produced serious separation of shaft (silo). He said GMs cultural and organizational structure was so bad that employees were unable to deliver key messages to each other or to take responsibility for defects. Valukas said: GM employees failed to solve the ignition switch in more than 11 years, a series of failures.
This will hardly bring comfort to the bereaved families; nor will it make concessions for politicians calling for the punishment of general motors. However, if Valukas says the right thing (no one has yet proved his mistake), his report will upset the auto community outside of Detroit.
GM is certainly not the only company that has been cursed by silos. Many companies have internal divisions that create factionalism and narrow vision. Take a look at recent corporate scandals and youll find many examples.
