Nakahira TOCALO Co., Ltd., Kobe, Japan Abstract According to the market survey by research organizations, the total market size of thermal spray industry in Japan is approximately 100 billion yen. This market consists of three sectors, turnover of coating job shops (45 billion yen), in-house production of big companies (45 billion yen), and sales of thermal spray equipment and consumables by suppliers (10 billion yen). In this paper, the current segmentation of application fields and main practical applications in the coating service market by coating job shops are introduced. And the future trend of the market is also discussed. Introduction Thermal spray in Japan has a long history, beginning with Mr. Kenjiro Ezawa, a merchant of precious metals in Ginza, Tokyo. He was interested in the thermal spray devices which was exhibited in the World Exposition held in Paris. Then, he purchased thermal spray devices and the patent in 1919 from Dr. Schoop, the inventor of thermal spray technology, and brought them to Japan for the first time.
